How to Help Your Student With Reading Comprehension
Plenty of students can decode every word on the page and still have no idea what they just read. Comprehension is a separate skill, and it can be taught.
Want this handled for you?SmartScroll makes a quick starting estimate, then adjusts the student's practice as they work.
Try it nowWhy students struggle with this
Students often read passively, eyes moving but brain off. Without stopping to find the main idea, make inferences, or connect ideas, nothing sticks.
What you can do at home
- Pause and ask 'what was that mostly about?' after each section.
- Teach them to make inferences: what is the author hinting but not saying?
- Have them summarize in one sentence. If they cannot, they did not get it.
- Pick books they actually care about. Interest drives comprehension.
