Students often jump into algebra before they are solid on negatives and order of operations, so the equations feel impossible. The fix is usually a missing foundation, not a lack of ability.
What you can do at home
- Explain an equation as a see-saw: whatever you do to one side, do to the other.
- To free x, undo what is attached to it, in reverse order.
- Check the basics first. If negatives or order of operations are shaky, fix those.
- Have them explain a solved problem back to you. Teaching it proves they get it.
