Most students memorize rules without understanding that a fraction is just part of a whole, or division in disguise. When the concept is shaky, every new topic built on it gets harder.
What you can do at home
- Use food. Half a pizza, a quarter of a chocolate bar. Fractions are easier when they are real.
- Show that 3/4 literally means 3 divided by 4. Rules make sense once the meaning does.
- Practice a little every day, not a lot once. Short and frequent beats long and rare.
- When they get one wrong, ask what they were thinking, so you find the real gap.
