How to Help Your Student With Percents
Percents show up everywhere, from sales to test scores, but students often memorize tricks without understanding what a percent really is.
Want this handled for you?SmartScroll makes a quick starting estimate, then adjusts the student's practice as they work.
Try it nowWhy students struggle with this
A percent is just a number out of 100, but students rarely connect the three: fractions, decimals, and percents are the same idea in different clothes.
What you can do at home
- Say it plainly. Percent means out of 100, so 25% is 25 out of 100.
- Practice with real prices. A 20% discount on a 50 dollar item makes it concrete.
- Show the link. 1/2 and 0.5 and 50% are all the same value.
- For tips and tax, teach finding 10% first, then adjust from there.
