How to Help Your Student With Math Word Problems
Word problems stump a lot of students who can do the math fine. Turning a wall of words into an equation is a separate skill, and it can be taught.

Try it nowWhy students struggle with this
Word problems mix reading and math. Students panic at all the words and grab numbers at random instead of figuring out what is actually being asked.
What you can do at home
- Read it twice. First for the story, then for what it is really asking.
- Underline the question and circle the numbers that matter.
- Translate words to math: 'total' means add, 'each' often means multiply or divide.
- Have them say the plan out loud before doing any math.
