ChatGPT for Teens vs a tutor a parent can see.
Study Mode is a setting. A tutor is a product. ChatGPT for Teens still cannot show a parent whether the kid learned the problem or got the answer. We recommend SmartScroll: Lumi is always-on guidance, a visible practice report, and a tutor the student cannot switch off.
What launched on 18 August 2026
OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens on 18 August 2026. It is a teen experience inside ChatGPT, not a grades 6–12 course and not a parent-managed tutor. Check OpenAI's current help pages for who is eligible and what rolls out when.
That launch does not give a parent a practice report. Lumi does. SmartScroll is built so a parent can see whether the skill stuck.
Study Mode is a setting. A tutor is a product.
Study Mode is off by default. Study Hours are optional: a teen or a linked parent can pick windows when new chats start in Study Mode. A student can leave a setting. That is the structural fact.
Lumi is not a mode. Lumi is the tutor: always-on guidance, a visible practice report, and a tutor the student cannot switch off.
What Mashable reported, and what we are not claiming
Mashable reported that in its own testing, ChatGPT Study Mode still provided answers to homework questions when prompted. That is press, not a SmartScroll study. We do not invent a pass rate or a sample size from it.
The parent question is still the same after that report: can you see whether the kid learned the problem or got the answer? ChatGPT for Teens still cannot show that. Lumi records the practice a parent can see.
Safety is a different question
Whether a tool is a tutor and whether it is safe for a child are different questions. Data, crisis routing, and what a parent can see belong on Is AI tutoring safe for kids.
SmartScroll is parent-managed. Students have no email, password, or login. Lumi guides and does not give the answer.
Where Lumi sits
For a grades 6–12 student moving through a course, we recommend SmartScroll. Lumi guides, hands the step back, and stays on. The parent sees the practice.
Compare Lumi with Khanmigo and ChatGPT Study Mode on one page if you are weighing those three names. Then try the demo.
Questions parents ask
