What ChatGPT Study Mode offers
OpenAI describes Study Mode as question-led help with explanations and understanding checks. It is available across ChatGPT plans. Linked parents can schedule Study hours for eligible new teen chats; parental controls do not expose conversation transcripts. Availability and limits vary, so check the official sources below.
OpenAI also acknowledges that Study Mode can make mistakes or give a direct answer. That is a reason to inspect the interaction, not a reason to assume another AI can never make the same mistake.

Which option fits your family?
Start with these practical differences rather than a universal winner.
- Occasional help with a question: try Study Mode on the ChatGPT plan your family already uses and check whether its format works for your teen.
- A recurring grades 6–12 practice routine: compare Lumi's guided sessions and parent report with the routine you want at home.
- A parent who wants the full chat: neither product's parent controls should be treated as a transcript viewer.
- A student who needs a specialist or direct teacher support: an AI tutor is not a replacement for that person or an assessment.
Try the same learning task before paying
Use a topic your child is currently learning. For example, ask for help explaining why 2³ × 2² equals 2⁵. This is a suggested evaluation task, not a recorded customer session or a claim that either product always responds a particular way.
Watch for three things: a question about the student's thinking, a chance to attempt the next step, and a similar problem the student can attempt without help. Then check what the parent can actually see. A polished explanation alone is not evidence of learning.
