What parent-managed actually means
A lot of teen AI products give the student their own login. The parent may get a weekly email, or a toggle, or a promise that a safer mode is available. The student still holds the account. That is student-managed software with a parent overlay.
Parent-managed means the parent creates the setup. The student does not get an email, a password, or a login of their own. They use what the parent opened. They cannot walk over to a personal ChatGPT account inside the same product, because there is no student account to walk over with.
Why a student account is an escape hatch
If the student owns the login, they own the exit. A study setting that is off by default, or easy to leave, is not a household rule. It is a preference. Teenagers are good at preferences.
ChatGPT Study Mode is a setting on a general assistant. Study Hours are optional windows when new chats start in that mode. A student can leave a setting. That is the structural fact, not a judgment of the people who built it. Check OpenAI's current product for how those controls work today.
A mode a teen can leave is not a tutor
A tutor is a product with one job that stays on. Lumi is not a mode inside a chatbot. Lumi is the tutor: always-on guidance, a visible practice report, and a tutor the student cannot switch off.
That does not mean a phone has no other apps. A determined teen can still open ChatGPT in a browser. Parent-managed setup does not lock every device in the house. It does mean the schoolwork product you paid for is not the escape hatch.
What a parent can see
After a completed session, a parent can see a practice report: the skill that was practiced, the minutes on task, and the exit result. That is enough to answer the useful question: did they practice, and did they finish?
A parent does not get the full Lumi chat thread. The chat stays on the student device and is not stored as a parent-readable transcript. If you want a word-for-word log, this is the wrong product. If you want evidence of practice without reading every message, this is the report.
