Is Kumon worth it?
Kumon can be worth it when a student responds to a carefully sequenced worksheet program, daily practice, and center check-ins, and your family can carry the local per-subject fee plus the trips. Kumon's Reading Program includes comprehension and interpretation; the real question is whether its format fits the way your student needs to learn.
What you are actually buying
Kumon is a worksheet method with an instructor and a center attached. A student works through a long, carefully ordered sequence, does a short set most days, and visits the center on a schedule so an instructor can check the work and move them on.
That design is genuinely good at fluency and habit. Daily repetition at a level the student can handle builds automaticity. Anyone dismissing the method has not watched a struggling student get faster because they did a little every day for a year.
You are not buying a six-subject homework product or a conversational tutor for tonight's assignment. You are buying a paced ladder in math and/or reading, including documented comprehension work in Reading, plus the structure of showing up.
When it is worth it
It is worth it when the named gap is fluency or habit, and your family can carry a per-subject monthly fee plus the trips. A student who needs automaticity, responds to a short daily set, and will actually go to the center is the fit the method was built for.
It is also worth it when the scheduled visit is the thing keeping the work consistent. If the folder only gets opened because someone will check it on Tuesday, that is a real reason to stay, not a failure of willpower.
When it usually is not
The method does not become the wrong spend because it failed. It becomes the wrong spend because the job changed.
- The student needs conversational explanations or help transferring a reading skill to tonight's class assignment.
- You need more than math and reading: science, writing, history, finance, or Spanish in the same product.
- The commute is the thing you are trying to get rid of.
- A middle or high schooler has stopped opening the folder, and more paper will not restart the habit.
Cost, without fake numbers
